I tell you most solemnly, you will be weeping while the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.

John 16:20

Sister Andrea Backer died today after what can only be described as a lifetime of intense suffering and pain. Once again, we are confronted with the question of suffering in this world: why it exists at all, and why some people must bear so very much. But there is no answer but the one promise Jesus made to all of us, that we would daily take up our cross and follow Him.

Sister Andrea came from an extended family that gave unstintingly to the Church. Two Uncles served as Franciscan priests; two Aunts and her own sister served as Franciscan Sisters; and three Aunts became Sisters of Divine Providence. With such a background, it may be easier to see how she could sustain her pain and grief over these past many years.

“Andy,” as she was affectionately known, began her ministry as a teacher, and later as a Principal in a number of schools staffed by our Community. She was an excellent teacher, whether it was math or music, logic or philosophy. She was able to break ideas down so that almost anyone could grasp the concepts she was explaining.

But illness was to be the main gift which she would be able to give. It was not an easy path for her, nor one, probably, which she would have chosen on her own. But she struggled mightily to accept the Will of God for her. Truly, she daily was required to take up a cross that gave no satisfaction; that brought no acclaim to her. Hers was a life hidden away, and there were no honors, no awards to be presented.

Still, those of us who watched her daily, monthly, yearly struggle know that now, finally, she is at peace. We believe that now she knows, clearly and truly, the real value of her life, a life so filled with anguish, but so totally dedicated to God.

Today, Sister Andrea died. We believe that in reality, today, Sister Andrea began to live; to live in a new and most wonderful way. We rejoice with her, as we thank our Provident God for her.
