The new province provides the sisters with increased opportunities to minister to the needs of the times. The people of our geographic region are, no doubt, familiar with the ministries of the Pittsburgh sisters. The Marie de la Roche Province now includes the following among its various sponsored ministries . . .

Camp Mishannock Kearns Spirituality Center Sacred Heart High School Providence Villa La Roche College Amelia House Retreat Ministry

Camp Mishannock, a summer camp for girls operated by the Sisters in New England, is a safe place where children can have fun, make new friends, and learn new skills while they also share life experiences and responsibility with others in a supportive community of faith.

Recognizing a constant hunger for spirituality and renewal of the human spirit, the Divine Providence Retreat Ministries operate three diverse retreat centers. The Kearns Spirituality and Conference Center, located on the Providence Heights property, is a non-denominational ministry offering programs in spirituality and holistic health (including Reiki) to people of all faiths who are searching for deeper meaning in their lives. In addition, the center offers meeting space for groups up to 250.

Providence Villa, a ministry of hospitality, is located on 16-acres of woodland at 10745 Babcock Boulevard in Gibsonia. The Villa welcomes individuals or small groups to meet in an environment away from life’s demands and pressures. From a few hours to several days, Providence Villa is ideal for individuals or small groups up to 20. The Villa has meeting rooms, 16 bedrooms, kitchen, library, formal dining room, and a small cottage; food service is available. Spiritual direction is available at both Kearns and Providence Villa. Transfiguration House of Prayer, which is located in a country setting just north of the city in Butler, offers a tranquil place for visitors to relax and to pray alone or with others.

Reaching out to families in need, the programs of La Oficina de Promoción y Desarrollo Humano in Puerto Rico empower individuals, families, and communities through workshops designed to improve self-esteem in youths, empower single women who are heads of household, facilitate support groups for survivors of domestic violence, provide parenting workshops, develop community leaders and accompany communities in their holistic response to the problems they face.

La Posada Providencia in Texas provides shelter for clients seeking political asylum, particularly those who are released from detention as clients of non-profit legal agencies, but who are unable to leave the Rio Grande Valley immediately.

Teaching and sharing the Catholic faith is an important part of the mission of the Sisters of Divine Providence. The sisters founded the Providence Heights Alpha School in 1924. The Alpha School is a value-based progressive school with 200 students in grades 1 through 8. Located at Providence Heights, the Alpha School prepares students to assume leadership roles by providing a strong academic program and Catholic values.

The Sacred Heart School system, administered by the Sisters in Kingston, Massachusetts in the Archdiocese of Boston, provides quality education to students from kindergarten through high school in a caring atmosphere that supports Gospel values and encourages

sharing in a community of faith. Programs prepare students for adult lives of responsible leadership, respect for the dignity of all persons, and a dedication to service. Founded by the Sisters in 1963, LaRoche College is a four-year liberal arts college in McCandless Township with a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs including the Pacem in Terris Institute, which brings students together from war torn countries around the world.

“Single mothers and their children are often the most disenfranchised people in society,” says Sister Mary Joan Coultas, Provincial Director of the new province. In keeping with their justice focus to serve the needs of this group, the sisters operate Providence Connections, Inc. , which includes the Providence Family Support Center on Brighton Road in the City’s North Side. The Center offers counseling, women’s programming, job training, and literacy and parenting workshops. The Providence Child Care Centers North (North Side) and South (Castle Shannon) are licensed day care centers providing care in a setting that enhances the quality of life for very young children. In nearby Clarion County, Amelia House, a SAFE house, provides temporary housing for women and children who are homeless or the victims of domestic violence and other violent crimes. “With outreach into homes, counseling, and support programs that teach and strengthen, the ministries of Providence Connections have helped many women gain a sense of hope,” Coultas said.

Unfortunately, the homeless in America increase in number each year. Room At The Inn provides immediate emergency shelter for families that are homeless.
