La Posada relies heavily on the assistance of volunteers to provide the best possible service to clients. The demands of a 24/7 shelter that operates year round far exceed the capacity of staff to adequately address all needs at all times. For this reason, we foster a volunteer ministry.
You can volunteer; there are numerous opportunities. Following is a general list of volunteers needed on a regular basis:
. Instructors for ESL, Citizenship, GED and computer classes.
. Drivers for transporting refugee clients to and from legal, health, educational, social and spiritual service providers.
. Grounds maintenance for vegetable garden, fruit and other trees, flowers and shrubs.
. Routine property maintenance, such as replacing light globes and filters, toilet repair, painting, gutter cleaning.

Ana Damen, has introduced the concept of "seasonal resident-volunteer" to La Posada. She arrives in late November and stays through March. Ana had previously volunteered with the Peace Corps and the Catholic Worker House. While at La Posada, Ana assumes responsibilities for cleaning, answering phones, transporting clients and picking up new arrivals. Ana rotates her volunteer tours to accommodate family visits and to take advantage of mild weather.

Manuel is waiting to receive his instructions from client coordinator Monica Rasmussen. She will be giving him destination points for clients requiring local transportation to various agencies and medical offices.

Manuel Rodriguez, once a La Posada client resident, has become one of La Posada's most reliable volunteers. He also sits on La Posada's program board and offers his insight to improve program delivery through the eyes of the clients. His accomplishments also include U.S. citizenship and achieving self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Gilberto Barrera (pictured far right) is a retired educator with 30 years of experience as an elementary school principal and teacher.

Mr. Barrera volunteers at La Posada three days a week, teaching clients English language communication skills. He tells us that the experience is highly rewarding and views his volunteerism as a ministry . . . “My Mother before her passing gave me a message that I believe was sent from the Lord. She asked that I continue to help the needy. I am honoring that message with my work at La Posada.”
