Mission Statement:
La Posada Providenci
a, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world, who are seeking legal refuge in this country. The Shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home; mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration; and imparts values which witness God's Providence in our world.

Since 1989, La Posada has provided shelter to persons (from countries with oppressive regimes or those experiencing natural disasters) who are in the legal process of seeking asylum or other legal relief in the United States. By sharing knowledge, experience and community resources, La Posada helps the population served to strive for self-sufficiency and to more easily integrate into U.S. culture.

Before La Posada, there was no place for indigent and documented immigrants and asylum seekers to receive basic living assistance while resettlement arrangements were made. It was not unusual for these clients to sleep on an office floor or at a paralegal's home. Today, shelter at La Posada means more than "three hots and a cot"; it is a mentoring influence for how arriving immigrants and asylum seekers approach their resettlement.

The clients we serve face many challenges. They are in a strange land, are anxious about the future and are burdened with the needs of their family members left behind. Frequently, they are unable to communicate their anxieties. The La Posada shelter represents a safe haven, one that is also welcoming for clients. This environment engenders trust and motivates clients to release their anxieties so that they can more easily learn English and embrace the notion that they can achieve successful cultural integration with hard work and their inherent skills.

La Posada's specialized program services offerings have garnered local recognition. As a result, the shelter has a list of accomplishments representing long-standing community collaborations that benefit clients. La Posada networks with more than 16 immigration and social-service agencies, including Proyecto Libertad and ProBAR legal services agencies for asylum seekers detained by U.S. Immigration authorities. Collaborations offer valuable in-kind support, including medical, dental and pharmaceutical services, language support, and job opportunities for clients with work permits. Neighboring churches also provide assistance.
