The long-standing ministry of Spiritual Direction is increasingly sought today by people who desire to grow in awareness and be deliberate about their spiritual journey. The ministry of Spiritual Direction helps you to listen to how God is at work in your life. The goal of Spiritual Direction is to come home to your truest self, created and gifted by God. Spiritual Direction provides you with an opportunity to reflect with another about your spiritual journey. The agenda for Spiritual Direction includes anything that impacts your spiritual life - relationships, life situations, values, and faith life. A trained and experienced Spiritual Director supports you in:
Spiritual Direction is not counseling. Counseling focuses on problem-solving and coping in difficult life transitions, the primary focus of Spiritual Direction is your relationship with God and the integration of that relationship into your daily life.
Spiritual Direction is also not about 'advice giving'. A Spiritual Director lovingly and attentively assists you to find your own answers within yourself.
Staff members are available to walk with you on your journey toward God. If you would like more information about the possibility of receiving ongoing spiritual direction or want to know how to go about finding a spiritual companion, please call the office weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm at 412.366.1124 for more information.
We do ask you to tell us a little about yourself and your desire for direction in order to match you with the appropriate person. You decide what contribution you can make for this service.
Retreats
Retreats for Individuals
You are welcome to come by the day or overnight for an individual retreat. You may come with your own prayer material or request a staff member for spiritual direction.
Private Retreat
A Private Retreat allows you time away from the busyness of daily life, for quiet and solitude and to spend time with God in prayer and reflection. You would come with your own material for prayer and decide upon your own schedule. You are welcome to join the Sisters of Divine Providence for morning liturgy and communal prayer at 8:00 am at Providence Heights . No Spiritual direction is included in a Private Retreat.
Directed Retreat
On a Directed Retreat, you have the opportunity to schedule a visit with one of our Spiritual Directors, Anne Winschel, CDP, or Carolyn Bodenschatz, CSJ.
A Spiritual Director is a skilled and compassionate listener who is trained in the art of helping another person to pay attention to the presence of God in prayer and life experiences. A Directed Retreat is tailored to you personally. You meet with your Spiritual Director each day of a Directed Retreat. Together, you listen to God's movements within you and make suggestions for further prayer and reflection.
Our Center's staff brings excellent training and years of experience to the ministry of Spiritual Direction.
Centering Prayer
Practice the Method of Centering Prayer taught by Thomas Keating and join the men and women who come to Kearns Spirituality Center on the first and third Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to enhance your practice with the support of a group.
The guidelines suggest that you choose a Sacred Word such as Jesus, Love, Peace, Mercy, Mary, Shalom or Amen. Then, seated comfortably in silence, you repeat the word quietly in rhythm with the breath and consent to God's presence and action within you. Whenever you become aware of your mind drifting, you return to the Sacred Word.
A free-will offering for the use of the Center is appreciated. For more information please contact Bernadette Young, CDP at 412-715-3346.
