In 1932, the first Sisters of Divine Providence came to the Island.They were: Sister Callista Strauss, Sister De Chantal Huber, Sister Inocent Miller, Sister Macaria Goertner, Sister Bertranda Leiniger and Sister Theodoret Bretzel.The second group of missionaries came in 1933. They were: Sister Hilda Lipke, Sister Regia Schmitt, Sister Floretta Hoerster, and Sister Francis Gabriel Beyerl. The first group came to Arecibo and the second group to Utuado. The main apostolate of the Sisters was teaching in the parish school, instructing children in the public school, visiting the sick.

— In 1933, the first two girls enter in the Community after a few years they left. In 1958, the Sisters opened mission in Orocovis. They were in Orocovis until 1978.

— In 1958, a group of ten girls went to Pittsburgh for their formation. After their novitiate they came back to the island. Every summer they went to the States for their formation.

— In 1959 four girls went to Pittsburgh. From these two groups Sister InesitaVeléz, Sister Aracelia Cruz, Sister Rose Elena Reyes, and Sister Margarita Rivera are with us. They are the first natives (Puerto Rican) to celebrate their Silver Jubilee in the community.

— In 1959, Sister Monica and Sister Clementine were appointed to the Catholic University in Ponce. They started the nursing school in Ponce the Catholic University. They worked until 1967.

— In 1962, Sister Mary Catherine Roth, a lab technician and Sister Mary Lea, a record librarian, began working in San Jorge Hospital. On October 15, 1963, the Sisters withdrew from the hospital at San Jorge.

— In 1968, Puerto Rico became a region.The first regional superior was Sister Rose Bertha Stegman (Theresa). She was the first director of Formation, too.

— In 2002, we lost our first Puerto Rican sister, Sister Marianita Ramos was 43 years with us. She is buried in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
