Ministries: Providence Connections
|
Amelia House Amelia House Closes Its Doors
For the past 16 years, Amelia House has sheltered numerous families for short stays or for a longer residence, up to a year. They have been advised and supported during their stay so that they could move on as more independent and stronger people.
For approximately a year and a half, the Board of Directors of Providence Connections has been concerned about the reduced number of families being sheltered at Amelia House. The question was: How can we continue to support this ministry to women and children feeling domestic violence if so few are being referred to Amelia House? One of the big changes was the movement of SAFE’s Bridge House/Shelter to a larger facility outside the area. Not only do they have more space for families, but can also keep families up to three months. SAFE (Stop Abuse For Everyone) is the domestic violence agency for Clarion County and the main source of referrals to Amelia House.
At the May Providence Connections, Inc., Board Meeting a lengthy discussion took place regarding the present situation. The 13 Board Members present, including five Sisters, unanimously recommended to the Corporate Members, the Provincial Leadership Team, that Amelia House be closed. With a sense of loss and of gratitude for the women who have more options than in the past, the Provincial Leadership Team unanimously approved closing Amelia House.
Our closing should not be seen as a failure of a program, but rather one of changing circumstances and transition necessitating the closure. The Board of Directors and the Provincial Leadership Team are grateful for all those who have supported Amelia House by their prayers and volunteer efforts: contributions of time, energy, materials, and monetary gifts for the women and their children who have lived at Amelia House.
Let us continue to remember in prayer all those struggling to be free of domestic violence and for those who support them in their efforts to live in peace and harmony. |
