Associates

Providence Award

The Associate Providence Award is given to an Associate who is nominated by the Associates because she/he exhibits the following criteria:
1.  manifests trust in Providence;
2.  lives with a spirit of joy, hospitality and hopefulness;
3.  demonstrates justice by word and service to those in need; and
4.  has been an active Associate for at least three years.

Nuala Filberg was the first recipient of the Providence Award.  Gil Weyhaupt, the second recipient, received the award at the Assembly in August, 2008.

2009 Providence Award

The 2009 Providence Award recipient is Esther Jimenez from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. This is the third Providence Award presented to an Associate who makes Providence visible in our world. Esther is a dynamic, compassionate person who knows how to listen and to care for others. She is the primary caregiver for her infirmed sister and yet still gives freely of her time and talents to help others in need. Esther is the president of the volunteers at the San Rafael Nursing Home, which is staffed by the Sisters of Charity. She also volunteers at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Home for Unwed Mothers. Esther is very active in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Arecibo where she is on the liturgy committee and a member of the Parish Pastoral Team. As a co-founder of pastoral care for the deaf, Esther has spent the past 20 years recruiting interpreters for their monthly Masses. She also provides them with spiritual support, retreats, conferences and social reunions.

Gracious, respectful and hospitable, Esther opened her home to our Sisters during the 75th Anniversary celebration. A retired Spanish teacher, she is always willing to translate for the Associates and the Community when requested.  Esther participates in the Associates’ meetings and in the Circles of Collaboration meetings. She makes God’s Providence visible to those around her whereever she is and always has a welcoming smile. Esther, a woman of prayer, puts others ahead of herself to show God’s Provident love. The people who know Esther admire her compassion for those in need, her humility and her deep love for our Provident God.

Unfortunately, Esther was not able to attend the Assembly to receive her award as she was recovering from knee replacement surgery. Sister Veronica Oravec accepted the award on her behalf.
